How to Prepare Your Hot Tub for Fall
Fall is the perfect time to give your hot tub a fresh start. Learn when to deep clean with a jet purge, how to drain and refill, and whether winterizing is right for you.
Fall Hot Tub Prep: Deep Cleaning, Draining, and Winterizing
As the leaves start to change and cooler nights settle in, fall is the perfect time to give your hot tub some seasonal care. Whether you plan to soak all winter long or close your spa until spring, preparing it properly will keep it clean, efficient, and protected.
When to Do a Deep Clean
At least 3–4 times a year, your hot tub should be drained, cleaned, and refilled. Fall is one of the best times because it sets you up for the colder months. Start with a jet purge cleaner, which flushes out the plumbing lines and removes hidden build-up of biofilm, oils, and debris.
We recommend using Leisure Time Jet Clean before draining. It’s specially formulated to clear out the internal plumbing lines, helping prevent cloudy water, odors, and circulation issues. After purging, drain the spa completely, wipe down the shell, and clean your filters before refilling with fresh water.
Refill and Balance for Fall Use
If you plan to use your hot tub throughout the fall and winter, now is the time to refill and balance your water. Once filled, test your water chemistry and adjust pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. Clean filters and fresh water mean your hot tub will run more efficiently and require fewer adjustments during the colder months.
Should You Winterize Your Hot Tub?
Not everyone uses their hot tub year-round. If you’d rather close it down for the winter, you’ll need to fully winterize your spa:
Drain all water completely from the tub, plumbing lines, and equipment.
Use a wet/dry vacuum to blow out any remaining water from the jets and plumbing.
Remove, clean, and store filters indoors.
Leave the cover securely in place to keep out debris and snow.
Winterizing prevents freezing damage, which can cause costly cracks or burst pipes. If you won’t be using your spa at all in winter, winterizing is essential.
Which Option is Right for You?
Year-round use: Deep clean with Leisure Time Jet Clean, refill, and enjoy cozy soaks under the fall leaves and winter snow.
Closing down: Fully winterize to protect your investment and make spring start-up easier.
